Enrollment deadlines

What happens if you miss Colorado's open enrollment window

Less than you fear, usually. A qualifying life event reopens the door, and there is more on that list than most people realize.

Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage through Connect for Health Colorado opens on November 1, 2026 and closes January 15, 2027. If you enroll by December 15, your coverage starts January 1.

That December date is the one to work to, because enrolling after it pushes your start to February 1 — and a month of paying your own way is an expensive way to buy four extra weeks of thinking time.

If you're wondering why other pages have been vague about the closing date this year, it's because for a while it genuinely was: a federal rule finalized in 2025 shortened every state marketplace's window, a court order in July 2026 put parts of the surrounding rules back in question, and Colorado looked at moving its own deadline before deciding against it. If any of that shifts again before November, we'll say so here.

Missing it isn't the end of the year

This is the part that surprises people who've been panicking about it.

Outside Open Enrollment you can still enroll if you've had a qualifying life event, and the common ones are:

  • Losing other coverage, including a job ending or aging off a parent's plan
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having or adopting a child
  • Moving, if you had coverage before the move
  • An income change that affects what help you qualify for

Each of those opens a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days from the event, during which you enroll exactly as though the window were open.

The way people lose these is by being slow about it. The clock runs from the event rather than from the day you got organized, and "I didn't have the paperwork yet" isn't an extension. So start the conversation before you've got the documents together — we can tell you what's coming while you go and find them.

And if you're looking at that list thinking none of it quite describes your year, ask anyway. More things count than the short version suggests, and we'd much rather tell you no in a five-minute call than have you assume it on your own.

The 2027 renewal change

If you already have a marketplace plan, Connect for Health Colorado will generally renew you into it, or into whatever replaced it, so you won't lose coverage by doing nothing.

But doing nothing and getting your best available option aren't the same thing. Auto-renewal checks none of the three questions that actually matter: whether your doctors are still in network, whether a better plan opened up, and whether your financial help has moved against next year's benchmark.

Carriers have asked to raise 2027 premiums by an average of about 11% before any help is applied, and Cigna is leaving Colorado's individual market altogether — its customers have nothing to renew into at all. For everyone else, the gap between "renewed" and "right" is wider this year than usual.

If you're not sure where you stand

Ask two questions out loud rather than assuming the answers. Does my situation count as a life event? And is the plan I was renewed into still the right one?

Both take one call, and neither costs anything.
