Accessibility statement

A lot of the people this site is for are over sixty-five, and a lot of them are using a screen reader, a magnifier, or a phone held at arm’s length. That is the design brief, not an afterthought to it.

What we’re building to

We target the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We treat that as a floor rather than a certificate: parts of this site go past it, and where we fall short we’d rather say so than claim conformance we haven’t tested.

What that means in practice

  • Text contrast is measured from the actual color values on every build, and the build fails if any pair drops below the standard. We do not take a designer’s word for a ratio.
  • The page holds together at 200% browser zoom without a horizontal scrollbar, at phone width and at desktop width.
  • Everything works from a keyboard, and whatever you’re on always has a visible outline.
  • Nothing is hover-only, nothing autoplays, and there are no carousels — no information is behind a motion you have to catch.
  • Buttons are at least 56 pixels tall and every tap target is at least 48 pixels, which matters more than it sounds like it does on a phone.
  • Type is set in real relative units against a 16-pixel base, so it follows your browser’s text-size setting instead of overriding it.
  • Forms have visible labels — not placeholder text that disappears the moment you start typing — and errors are announced, not just colored red.
  • Headings run in order with no levels skipped, so a screen reader’s outline of the page matches what you see.

Where we know we fall short

This section is here because an accessibility statement with nothing in it is not a statement, it’s a marketing claim.

  • The appointment scheduler is somebody else’s software. We embed it, and we do not control its markup or how it behaves with a screen reader. If the scheduler is what’s in your way, call (970) 840-1250 and we will book the time for you — that path is not second-class.
  • Documents from carriers and CMS are not ours. Plan brochures, Summaries of Benefits, and government forms arrive as PDFs of varying quality. Ask and we’ll get you the content in a format that works, or read it to you.
  • We have not had an independent audit. Our testing is our own — automated checks plus keyboard and zoom passes on every page before it goes live. That is not the same as an outside expert with a screen reader, and we are not going to describe it as though it were.

Getting this in another format

Ask and we will tell you what we can produce. Today that means plain digital documents, in English. We do not currently have braille, audio, translation, or interpreter services on retainer, and we would rather say so than have you find out after you have asked. What we can do is on our language assistance page.

Tell us when something doesn’t work

Call (970) 840-1250, TTY 711, Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm Mountain, or send us a question. Tell us what page you were on and what happened — “the third box wouldn’t take my keyboard” is plenty.

We’ll tell you what we can fix and when, and if the answer is that we can’t fix it quickly, we’ll tell you that too and do whatever you were trying to do with you over the phone.
